Background We have already reported that konjac
extract can improve skin condition in cheeks, but the effects for the whole
body did not show it. In this report, to study whether konjac extract can improve
transepidermal water loss(TEWL)of whole body, a randomized placebo controlled
double blind test was performed in healthy volunteers who had reported dryness
of the skin.
Methods 157 health volunteers took a drink(340 mL/day)with or without konjac extract including 1.8 mg of glucosylceramide for 12 weeks and did not take it for the following 4 weeks. TEWL was evaluated at the neck, upper back, elbow and dorsum pedis using a Tewameter.
Results On elbow and dorsum pedis, TEWL of the konjac extract uptake group was
significantly reduced at 8 and 12 weeks compared with the control group.
Conclusions These results demonstrate that dietary konjac extract containing
glucosylceramide improves skin condition of whole body.
